Trauma Informed Schools

At Bishop Martin, our focus is on a relational environment and the very culture and ethos of the setting. It requires emotionally regulated adults who can provide essential calming and containment for a child when they are overwhelmed by an event, a situation or their feelings. The components of the Trauma and Mental Health-Informed Schools model are supported by evidence-based research showing positive change in well-being and mental health through Protect, Relate, Regulate and Reflect.

This approach places caring, trusted relationships at the heart of school life. It means looking beyond a child’s behaviour to understand what they may be feeling and what support they need. Calm responses, predictable routines and clear, consistent boundaries help children feel secure, while supportive adults help them recognise and manage their emotions.

These principles reflect our Christian values of Trust, Respect, Kindness and Hope, helping us create a compassionate school community where every child can experience belonging and grow in confidence.

Our Relationships Policy sits alongside our Behaviour Policy to ensure that we have a consistent approach as a staff team and every child feels safe, valued and ready to learn.
