At Bishop Martin, we believe music is vital as it enables children to gain a broad, well-balanced education and allows children to develop their imagination and creativity.

We deliver a high-quality music education that engages pupils and inspires them to develop their love of music and talents as musicians. Music enriches the lives of individuals and groups and, consequently, we believe this will increase self-confidence and give the pupils a sense of achievement.

Bishop Martin’s music curriculum reflects our diverse society through the pieces we select and share with the children in music lessons, during our collective worships and music played around school. Musicians and music from a range or backgrounds, cultures and heritages are carefully selected to inspire our children. We focus on nine key musical concepts of: pulse, rhythm, pitch, dynamics, tempo, timbre, structure, texture and notation.

Music classes are taught weekly and on a termly rota by expert music practitioners, including a music specialist from ‘Resonate’, Liverpool’s Music Hub who delivers brass tuition to Year 4, 5 and 6. This operates as a gateway for Liverpool’s young musicians, impacting their lives, enhancing our city and encapsulating all the aims of our INSPIRE Curriculum.

In Years 1, 2 and 3, our pupils take part in Liverpool Anglican Cathedral's Schools' Singing Programme. Led by the Choral Outreach Lead, this programme teaches children a structured curriculum designed to develop sophisticated musical understanding and language through singing. A key focus of the sessions is preparing pupils to confidently lead their own Evensong worship.

Our Christian values are an integral part of our learning, including music with values such as perseverance, compassion and courage which help to support children to reach their potential.

Exciting news:

We are excited to announce that this year we will be continuing our genre or composer of the week. The music will play throughout the school as pupils come into school and throughout the corridors. This half term we have begun with the genre of Musical Theatre and this week we are listening to the amazing works of Stevie Wonder.

It has also been a delight to hear some talented pianists playing during breakfast club this half term too. A lovely way to start the morning, for those playing and for those of us listening.
