  • Enabling Environments

At Bishop Martin, we are committed to creating Enabling and Purposeful Environments that are calm, safe and relational. We recognise that children’s social, emotional and developmental needs are evolving and believe that our environments should be created in a way to meet them. By embedding therapeutic principles into everyday school life, we aim to create inclusive spaces where every child can flourish – socially, emotionally and academically.

Our approach is rooted in secure relationships, trauma-informed and attachment-aware practice and the understanding that regulation underpins learning. We intentionally design our spaces to reduce unnecessary sensory input, creating environments that support focus, predictability and emotional safety for all. We design our environments to support emotional wellbeing, connection and a strong sense of belonging.

To achieve our aim of Enabling Environments, we intentionally consider key elements of our physical and emotional environment, including colour, furniture, light, cognitive load, comfort, biophilia, organisation and music. Each of these elements plays a vital role in supporting regulation, safety and inclusion and forms the foundation of our approach to creating inclusive spaces.
